Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said that discussions should be held with opposition parties regarding the amendments proposed by MDP to the Constitution.

During the parliamentary debate on changing the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), several MDP members spoke that an amendment to the Constitution should not be submitted suddenly. Members noted that an extensive study should be conducted and discussed in this regard.

Speaking on the matter, Nasheed said that the MDP's National Council has formulated a schedule for the work to be carried out on amending the Constitution.

However, Nasheed said that it was not right to bring the amendments as desired by MDP alone and that all parties should collaborate on the amendments.

While the constitution is being amended, we will hold discussions with parties: Nasheed

President of the Maldives Democratic Party, Nasheed has proposed major changes to the constitution during the recent National Council meeting of MDP.

This includes holding a congress to set a date for a referendum to change the presidential system in the Maldives to a parliamentary system, and the decision to pass major constitutional changes at the congress.

Changes proposed by Nasheed:

- Changing the number and composition of independent institutions.

- Determining the number of Supreme Court judges in the Constitution.

- A candidate who obtains no less than 30 percent of the total vote in the presidential election will be declared the winner of the election.

- If no candidate receives 30 percent of the total vote, the constitution decides to hold the second round between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes.

- A vote to change the system of governance and a date for the vote. And to establish the system of governance in the Constitution according to the results.

- Establishing additional decentralization policies in the Constitution.
