Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed slammed the 56 bills submitted to the parliament by the state, describing them as outdated and archaic amendments that do not reflect the leading Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s manifesto.

After announcing the agenda for Wednesday's session, Nasheed spoke about the bills, calling them an excuse to alleviate the pressure on the government by the international community.

He further criticised the bills, noting that they were incomplete, and that the youth would criticise them greatly as these bills have been around in several institutions since the 1980s.

Referring to the amendments proposed by the state, Nasheed speculated that the administration's work was less than satisfactory as they do not have the appropriate resources for the task.

Nasheed noted that there was no need for the state to fill in the shoes of the parliament.

The Speaker had formerly also noted that it was the Parliament's responsibility to draft bills, and advised the Parliament committees to do so. Although some committees began work on the task, it never reached fruition.
