Elections Commission (EC) said on Wednesday that around 400 candidates had filed their nominations for the upcoming parliamentary election by the end of the deadline.

The commission's Vice President Ismail Habeeb said the application deadline had been until 14:00 hrs on Wednesday to file their nominations for the upcoming elections scheduled to be held on March 17. During this period, 381 candidates filed nominations for 93 constituencies, he said.

However, EC is yet to review some of the applications submitted and will reject the applications of those who do not meet the eligibility criteria. Therefore, there is a possibility that the number of candidates running in the election may change.

As the forms are currently being processed, the commission was unable to say which constituency has the most number of candidates running for the seat, and which constituency received the least amount of contesting candidates.

A total of 284,337 Maldivians are eligible to vote in this election.
