Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has geared up to begin the Under-19 Youth Championships on Sunday, June 9, after arranging to proceed the matches during mornings and late afternoons.

This competition, which was initially scheduled for May 20 was also scheduled for the 1st of June after postponement.

Mihaaru News reports that these postponements were attributed to the delays in completing ongoing repairs of the Galolhu National Stadium's lighting system. Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation had entrusted the repairment of the Stadium's lighting system to Sifainge Welfare Company (SIWEC) on January 31 this year.

The project was appointed to SIWEC with an allocation of MVR 3.9 million and a stipulation of concluding the repairment in 30 days. However, practical work of repairing the lighting system was begun on May 26. Ministry of Sports explained that the repair work was commenced after identifying and grasping the overall extent of damages borne by the systems.

The Ministry also revealed that the lighting systems will be fully repaired in early June as well. However, FAM had held a draw for the championship on Monday and scheduled the matches for 08:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs.

Club Valencia and Victory Sports Club, which had secured a spot in the first division for the first time, as well as eight other clubs, are included in the first division of the U19 Youth Competition.

Club Valencia, however, has been suspended from all club activities by FAM citing administrative issues, further prohibiting training for the youth team of the club as well.

The competition will be divided into two teams. Each team is scheduled to play two matches before Eid-Al-Adha, beginning on June 16 during the group stages. The remaining matches of the group stage has been scheduled for June 23 and 24 after a nine day Eid break.

Group A: TC Sports Club, Odi Sports Club, Buru Sports Club, Super United Sports

Group B: Maziya Sports & RC, Club Green Streets, Club Eagles, United Victory

While the two best clubs of each group are set to proceed to the semi-finals, both matches of semi finals are scheduled for June 27, during the day. Meanwhile, the final match has been slated for the evening of June 30.
