Elections Commission (EC) on Thursday issued a reminder to the candidates of the April 6 Parliamentary Elections, that failure to submit the financial statements detailing their campaign expenditures would result in penalties or incarceration.
According to the amendment made to the Elections General Act in 2018, failure to obey instructions as stated in the Act constitutes an election offence, which would result in a penalty of MVR 6,000 - 24,000, or imprisonment ranging between six months to two years.
The deadline to submit the financial statements is 0000 hrs on April 28.
EC member Ahmed Akram revealed on Thursday that only 22 out of the 395 candidates have submitted their statements after the elections. He reminded the candidates that submission of financial statements is a legal obligation and urged them to do so without delay.
As per Maldivian law, the financial statements must be done by an auditor registered at a relevant state authority.
