Maldives Police Service, on Monday, declared that taxis were assisting the transportation of illicit drugs and alcohol, adding that Police would reveal further details of these vehicles in the future.
Police disseminated certain details of these vehicles through a press conference held at Iskandhar Koshi, adding that motorcycles were used for transportation as well.
Drug Enforcement Department (DED)'s Head and Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shakir noted three taxis, two private cars and five motorcycles being utilized during the past four months.
He added that measures will be taken against taxi drivers complicit in hauling these illegal substances.
According to the DED Head, details such as the taxis' license plates are currently withheld as Police have identified, in some cases, that the accomplice drives were not the owners of the vehicles.
So far, Police have confiscated 158 kg of heroin and 65 kg of cannabis during their operations in 2019.
According to Police statistics for the past four months, there are 51 cases of drug trafficking, 204 cases of drug peddling, 39 cases of illegal possession of alcohol and 309 cases of individuals caught under the influence.
