LRA to investigate foreign workers protest

Among those detained are 38 Indian nationals and 17 Bangladeshis.

Labor Relations Authority (LRA) has initiated an investigation into potential violations of the rights of foreign workers who protested in Male' earlier today over unpaid salaries.

A group of 55 foreign workers demonstrated near the Muliaage area before police detained and handed them over to Immigration.

Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed in a post on X, said that action would be taken under the Immigration Act once the investigation is concluded.

“Police have handed over 55 foreigners who protested in the green zone today. The Labor Relations Authority is working at the Immigration's Detention Center as the foreigners claim their rights have been violated. No person living in the Maldives under a permit issued by Immigration shall be allowed to violate the laws and regulations of Maldives,” Shamaan said.

Among those detained are 38 Indian nationals and 17 Bangladeshis.

However, it is unclear which company these expats were employed by.
