Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions has said today that some members of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), Elections Commission (EC), and Civil Service Commission (CSC) are being dismissed due to disciplinary issues and compromised independence.

The committee has decided to look into some issues submitted against ACC Vice President Abdul Salam, ACC member Thoha Mohamed, EC Vice President Ali Nashath, EC members Mohamed Athif and Dr Mohamed Zahir, and CSC President Mohamed Nasih.

Secretary General of the Parliament Fathimath Niusha announced this in today's sitting. She said that Article 17 (a) of the ACC Act states that in fulfilling the duties of the commission, members must not be swayed by threats or influence. Article 17(b) states that personal interest should not be involved in the resolution of any matter or establishing policies.

The law states that a member can be dismissed if either of these two are articles are contravened, she said, adding that multiple allegations against Salam and Thoha for acting against these articles have been submitted to the Committee on Independent Institutions.

In relation to EC and CSC, the Secretary General said that relevant laws indicate that members can be dismissed if they act against disciplinary standards.

She said that complaints of this regard have been submitted against Nashath, Asif, Zahir and Nasih to the Committee on Independent Institutions.

Speaker of Parliament has forwarded the matter to the Committee on Independent Institutions for further review and decisions.
