The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition has said that they welcome the decision of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) to support Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the second round of election scheduled for Saturday, September 30.

MDA, led by Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed backed the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the first round of the election. In a meeting held on Tuesday night, 33 members of the MDA Council voted to leave president Solih and support Dr. Muizzu in the second round.

According to MDA, they made this decision because they anticipate president Solih's defeat and believe that Dr. Muizzu will secure a substantial victory in the second round, based on the outcomes of the first round.

The PPM/PNC supported the decision made by MDA, and issued a press statement accepting the decision on behalf of all members of the coalition.

The press statement read, "The leader of this coalition and PPM, president Abdulla Yameen, presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, running mate Hussain Mohamed Latheef, leadership and ordinary members of the coalition welcome the leader of MDA Ahmed Siyam, MDA leadership, Council and all members of MDA".

Dr. Muizzu and interim leader of the PPM/PNC Abdul Raheem Abdulla were present in Addu City for the campaign and returned to Malé on Wednesday night.

The Maldives National Party (MNP) led by Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim formed an alliance with PPM/PNC. The coalition partner remaining with MDP and president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is the Adhaalath Party.

Dr. Muizzu received over 100,000 votes during the first round of election compared to over 86,000 votes received by president Solih.
