The Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances on Tuesday summoned former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor for questioning over the investigation of the enforced disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan and the murder of religious scholar Dr Afrasheem Ali.
According to a social media post by the Commission, it questioned Adeeb and recorded a statement regarding several accusations against him alleging his involvement in both of the cases.
Although the commission created by incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the statement, Maldives Correctional Service on Tuseday granted Adeeb permission to seek medical treatment abroad, based upon the advice of the Medical Board.
Adeeb's convictions were recently overturned, freeing him from a hefty 33-year jail sentence, while the Criminal Court also sent back certain charges to the Prosecutor General's Office.
While many allege that Adeeb was involved in the enforced disappearance of Rilwan, he is further accused of withholding information about the perpetrators behind Dr Afrasheem's murder.
Since its inception, the Commission summoned several individuals for its investigations, and stated that major developments were achieved.
Furthermore, Chair of the Presidential Commission Husnu al-Suood revealed in April that the Commission has uncovered the identities of the perpetrators behind the murders of Dr Afrasheem and blogger Yameen Rasheed, and the enforced disappearance of Rilwan.
He further declared that the Commission uncovered the motives behind the three cases, noting that it was the Commission's biggest success yet as Maldives Police Service was unable to shed light on the matter.
