Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated his administration's staunch commitment and support towards the Maldives on Tuesday.

President Sirisena gave the reassurance to Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during the latter's state visit to the neighbouring country.

The President's Office revealed that the two leaders held official talks on Tuesday, during which President Sirisena described Maldives as a longstanding close friend of Sri Lanka and assured his government's full commitment to supporting the archipelago.

The discussions focussed on existing bilateral ties between the two nations, in the areas of economy and trade, environment, fisheries, health, and tourism. The Office shared that the talks also touched on climate change and its impact on the two island nations which are particularly vulnerable to the dangers.

Both presidents further agreed on collaborative efforts to combat social issues such as the use and trafficking of illicit drugs.

During the sit-down, President Solih highlighted Sri Lanka's contributions to the development of Maldives, and expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation in mutually beneficial areas.

President Solih further stressed the priority his administration placed on regional cooperations. The President's Office stated that President Sirisena agreed with the sentiment and urged all South Asian countries to work together to ensure regional peace and security.

President Solih concluded his state visit to Sri Lanka late Tuesday. He was the Guest of Honour at the 71st Independence Day celebrations of Sri Lanka.
