The design of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been unveiled for the first time. The designs are inspired by Maldivian culture and history.
The outer design of the terminal is designed in the form of waves. The walls from the outside are designed to look like the designs used on the walls of ancient mosques. MACL has not revealed any other information in addition to the designs.
The new terminal, which has an area of 78,000 square meters, is being constructed with state-of-the-art services.
MACL and Saudi Arabia's Bin Laden Group signed an agreement in 2019 to promote Maldivian culture in the internal designs of the new terminal. The terminal was scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
However, MACL stated that the new terminal will be completed by the end of next year. The company said that the work on the framework has been completed.
The state-of-the-art terminal project was initiated in 2018 during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration. However, the work has been delayed significantly since the change of government.
The project is estimated to cost MVR 5.5 billion and is being carried out with the assistance of The Saudi Fund and other Middle Eastern countries.
