President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will propose amendments to the law during this session of Parliament to end the prolonged detention of people arrested for various crimes.

In his first presidential address at the opening of the Parliament this year, President Muizzu said that one of the government's major policies in enacting laws is to reduce crime rates and rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders into the community.

He also called for reducing imprisonment and punishment rates, modernizing the management of prisons, and making them compassionate places of reform.

"We will start this month to end the detention of people for investigation. We will also propose amendments to the law during this session of Parliament," he said.

Over the years, there have been continuous complaints of being detained for a prolonged period until the end of the trial.

In addition, he said that since the day he was sworn in as President, the judiciary has functioned without any interference from the government.

President Muizzu said that he would submit the necessary legal changes to the composition of the JSC, as he had promised to decrease political influence in the judiciary.

"In my address to the nation after taking the legal oath of office as President of the Republic of Maldives, I said that from that day onwards, the government's influence in judicial proceedings was over. Our government will uphold this principle," he said.
