A Swiss national, who was detained pending trial for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives, has passed away at Maafushi Prison.
Maldives Correctional Service confirmed the death of a 59-year-old man named Peter Thomas Dunn.
According to Corrections, the man suddenly fell unconscious and collapsed in his cell. He was immediately rushed to Maafushi Prison Medical Centre, where CPR was administered.
He was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest at 4:00 pm after being taken to Maafushi Health Centre.
The Correctional Service stated that it had informed his family, the Inspector of Correctional Services, the police, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), and the National Integrity Commission about his demise.
