A total of 32 inmates, who completed the first drug rehabilitation program at Maafushi Prison, have reverted back to society on Friday, September 2.

Though the inmates, post completion of their rehabilitation program, have resumed normal life with respective families, Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) states they will be closely monitored for a period of one year.

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and the Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamedfulhu had met with the inmates. The two had imparted words of encouragement to the inmates, urging them to remain as respectable citizens of the community.

Home Minister further claimed this was a historic and progressive step forward in rehabilitating inmates, and providing them with a second opportunity to revert back to their communities.

This was the first such program was specifically targeted inmates arrested for drug abuse. The inmates went through vigorous detox phases, education, and vocational training along with community integration training.

Over 70 percent of Maafushi Prison's inmates were imprisoned over drug abuse charges.

While the Deputy Director of Rehabilitation and Reintegration Ms. Najma Abdulla bemoaned lack of resources for the programs, it was launched over extreme necessity.
