Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed, on Wednesday night, confirmed that there was no break-in at Maafushi Prison although intel had received reports that perpetrators were attempting to enter the prison.

The prison was brought to alert status over the intel reports, and authorities conducted a headcount as well as an operation to inspect the cells.

Tweeting details of the operation, Commissioner of Prisons confirmed that no unauthorised personnel had entered the prison and no inmates had escaped as well. The prison has now been brought back to normal status.

In the past, Maafushi Prison has seen riots and demonstrations, when inmates had ganged up against prison officers in protest. However, it has been a while since an inmate had tried to break out of the prison.

The most frequent issue reported from the prison is regarding inmates smuggling in prohibited products, such as mobile phones and electronic devices.
