The Democrats have condemned Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s decision to not cooperate in holding the swearing in ceremony of President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu unless the no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is allowed to proceed as scheduled.

The Democrats - a break away party formed by former members of MDP who support Nasheed - alleges that it is incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who, with his defeat in September's presidential election, is encouraging MDP's parliamentary group (PG) to obstruct Muizzu's swearing in ceremony.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the party called on MDP to respect the laws of the Constitution and to revert to the fundamentals of democracy.

MDP, meanwhile, claims that it is against the basics of democracy for Nasheed to remain as Speaker when more than the majority of the parliament had signed stating they held no confidence in him. They further alleged that Nasheed is working in contravention of parliament regulations to obstruct efforts to remove him from his position.

MDP PG has also raised concerns that Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla may not attend Sunday's parliament session, and in doing so stop the no confidence vote from proceeding that day. The party said that if such a thing is done, they will stop cooperating with conducting any further parliamentary work until the no confidence vote is taken. MDP further stated that President Elect Muizzu's oath will also not be legally acceptable if it is officiated over by a Speaker who does not hold the confidence of the parliament.
