Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) confirms it will commence second phase of Noonu Atoll Maafaru International Airport development soon.

ADFD's Director General Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi gave the assurance of this to Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, who is currently visiting United Arab Emirates (UAE). The two met and discussed on various infrastructural development projects currently ongoing in the Maldives.

Minister Shahid confirmed the news via Twitter, notifying ADFD is expected to expand the facilities in Maafaru International Airport soon, though exact date has not been disclosed.

"We had a constructive discussion," the minister tweeted.

Expansion of the airport includes increasing the length of the runway tarmac, to accommodate larger commercial carriers. ADFD envisions the airport will become a connecting hub for East European destinations.

Maafaru Airport is only second to Velana International Airport (VIA), in terms of space and facilities. ADFD spent USD 60 million on the project.

The current runway measures 3,500 meters capable of accommodating Airbus A320s and Boeing-737s.
