Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to send 1,000 underprivileged citizens to Hajj during the next five years if elected.
Dr. Muizzu made the pledge while speaking to the locals of Meemu atoll Mulah during his campaign visit. At the campaign rally, he said that the state-initiated Maldives Hajj Corporation was currently not operating ideally, and said rigorous overhaul was needed in the company.
Dr. Muizzu, who is also the Malé City Mayor, said that the underprivileged citizens should be facilitated with the opportunity to pay for their Hajj pilgrimage expenses on an installment scheme, and pledged to facilitate it.
"We need to strengthen the Hajj Corporation financially by investing the Hajj fund, which would also lead to a reduction in Hajj fees," Dr. Muizzu said.
In a bid to ensure benefits for the citizens through the Zakat Fund, his government will establish Maldives Zakat House with legal authority with the aim of using the fund for investments to increase profitability.
At Mulah campaign rally, Muizzu made several pledges which include;
- Acquiring designated aircraft to Maldivian Airlines’ fleet to increase Chinese tourist arrivals
- Fixing yellow-fin tuna rate at MVR 80 per kilogram
- Reduction of petrol and diesel prices for fishers
- Initial Public Offering (IPO) for local fishers from Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)
- Development of a causeway to link Muli and Naalaafushi
Besides the pledges made for Mulah, Dr. Muizzu has made several pledges including harbor development, land reclamation, housing, and other initiatives for the islands he visited.
