LUX* South Ari Atoll Resort and Villas introduced edible straws, biodegradable cups and plant-based 'beef' as part of their latest sustainability initiatives.

Reportedly, the tapioca, rice flour and water-based straws stay sturdy for up to an hour before last up to one hour before beginning to soften and dissolve.

The resort's Café LUX* has begun to serve ice blends of coffee in bamboo cups with dishwasher-friendly silicone lids which are biodegradable as well. The cups, made with bamboo-fibre, are also stocked in retail shops in order to cater for guests who wish to keep them as souvenirs.

Finally, three of resorts eight restaurants now serve the plant-based protein, formally known as ‘Beyond Burger’. This vegan option was embraced by leading brands, tech companies and major news media across the world.

The biodegradable cups and edible straws are intended to avoid the pollution resulting from the use of single-use plastics while the plant-based burger aims to reduce various constraints on the environment caused by the production and consumption of meat-based products like burgers.

“Protecting the environment is at the core of everything we do. Our planet needs us now more than ever, and we are proud to demonstrate mindful, sustainable and innovative top luxury. Our guests love it, and for many travellers, a sustainable mindset is a fundamental criteria when choosing a destination”, General Manager at LUX* South Ari Atoll Resorts and Villas Jonas Amstad.

LUX* South Ari Atoll was recently awarded ‘Leading Eco-Friendly Resort in the Maldives’ at the South Asian Travel Awards 2019.
