Faafu Atoll Council has arranged to send 20 employees to Sri Lanka this month on the council's expense.
As reported in Mihaaru News, this trip, which will cost over MVR 150,000 from the council's budget, is an experiential trip coupled with a holiday. Twenty out of the thirty five employees of the council are expected to join this trip.
Mihaaru News reports that they were unable to get a response from Faafu Atoll Council President despite attempting to contact them several times to seek further information about this trip.
In addition to Faafu Atoll council, the island council of Faafu atoll Magoodhoo also plans to send a number of employees to Sri Lanka on an experiential trip this month.
However, Magoodhoo Council said that this trip is funded by a Dubai company through a proposal submitted to them by the Council. No expenses of the trip will be covered through the Council's budget.
These trips are planned despite the government having instructed councils as well to focus on expenditure reduction through halting trips, events and sports competitions due to the economic situation of the country.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim has also previously raised concerns that some councils are conducting unnecessary trips to destinations such as UAE, Turkey and Thailand.
Faafu Atoll Council has won first place in the Local Government Authority's Perfomance Index in 2022. In separate indexes, they rated first in Effective Index and Security Index.
