Athletics Association of Maldives (AAM) declares their intention to achieve five medal finishes in the upcoming Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) set in Mauritius.

The Secretary General of AAM Ahmed Munthagim stated that the association will only participate in events with potential podium finishes.

"With athlete performances within the past two years and the collection of other data, we are working with the coaches to conclude what events we can win medals in. A decision will be taken afterwards" said Munthagim.

Speaking about the event, taking place in July 2019, the association's President Mohamed Tholal stated that the association will secure training opportunities for the athletes taking part in the event.

"Either way, we can't achieve the goals while staying in Maldives. They can't invest the time with job and family responsibilities. Even with a synthetic track, there are other facilities lacking in the Maldives. Which is why we will find foreign training"
