Athletics Association of Maldives (AAS) announces an invitational-only Athletic 'Grand Prix' contest that is set to take place on the 13th and 14th of September at the picturesque grounds of Addu, Seenu Atoll.

Named ‘Jumhooree 50 Grand Prix’ in celebration of the nation's 50 years of independence, the competition will be graced by the top 8 athletes in the country.

General Secretary of AAS, Ahmed Munthaqim, stated that invitations have been sent to the athletes and August 30 has been allotted as a deadline to confirm participation.

He added that although the association would not be covering the expenses of travelling contestants, the winners of the Grand Prix would take home travel allowances along with their prize earnings.

The event will take place at the Hithadhoo Zone Stadium, where athletes will compete against each other through seven categories; 100 Meters, 200 Meters, 400 Meters, 800 Meters,1500 Meters, 3000 Meters rallies and long jump.

The organizers of the Grand Prix express hopes that it will be held as an annual competition, and plans to be hosted in the capital Male next year are already underway.

With the addition of the Grand Prix competition, two national level competitions will be held across the nation, the first being the National Athletic Competition.

Athletics 'Grand Prix' competitions are held in many countries, extending exclusive invitations to some of the best athletes in the world. In 2017, professional athlete Hassan Saaid won the bronze medal for the 100 metres rally at the Asian Grand Prix, having earned two gold medals for both 100 and 200 metres in the Indian Grand Prix in the previous year.
