Local media Mihaaru News commenced its well-anticipated 'Mihaaru Awards', on Monday evening at 'Dharubaaruge' in capital Male' City.
The ceremony is hailed widely as the most prestigious sport recognition event of the year.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, First Lady Fazna Ahmed took part in the ceremony.
Additionally Minister of Sports Ahmed Mahloof took part as well.
"In order to improve performances in sports, it is essential that we note, and appreciate all the efforts put in by athletes in courts and fields alike, throughout the year", said Mihaaru Award's official spokesperson.
The source also added that the function will acknowledge the most notable names in sporting across 2018.
The colorful celebration will feature a variety of performances set to entertain the gathering, throughout the evening.
In addition to the regular awards, in this ceremony, special recognition awards are given to athletes that have delivered outstanding performances in international competitions and also to those who have been serving sports for a long period of time.
Mihaaru Awards is the first such sports award platform in Maldives to have introduced individual sports categories.
The main sponsors of Mihaaru Awards are Ooredoo Maldives and Allied Insurance. The media partner for the event is local broadcasting channel VMedia.
Both the design of the awards and the event's official branding was carried out by its advertisement partner, Think Advertisement.
The associate partners for the event are Sony Sports, Total Fitness Group (TFG), Veligaa Hardware, BHM Traders, Rainbow Enterprises Pvt Ltd and Print Lab.
