Ali Imaan, on Thursday, smashed the 200-metre backstroke national record by 10.48 seconds, at the 18th FINA World Championships at Gwangju, South Korea.
The record was previously held by Mohamed Aan Hussain with a timing of 2 minutes and 43.71 seconds. The new record stands at 2 minutes and 33.23 seconds and was broken only two days after Aan managed the record at the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).
The World Championships is taking place between July 12- 28.
The national team squad at the championship comprising of Aishath Sausan, Aishath Sajina, Mubal Azzam Ibrahim, and Imaan, set a national record by completing the 4x100 meter long course mixed medley relay in 4:56.79 minutes.
Swimmers are currently representing Maldives in two coinciding international sporting events by the two squads competing for the FINA World Championships and the IOIG, held at Mauritius.
