Team PUBG, on Saturday, was crowned the national champions of futsal after they won 'Red Bull Winning 5', a five-man futsal tournament held across the archipelago.
After an intense round of matches, the team from Hoarafushi, Haa Alif Atoll, played against Team Alhi Bro from Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, in the finals and won one-nil with a golden goal scored by Ibrahim Ziyaad, following the end of regulation time. The match was held at the Youth Park in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale'.
“We played our very best and having won, we felt so honoured to have made our island and our people proud. It was like a dream come true for us. A proud and unforgettable moment in our lives", said Team PUBG.
Moreover, when asked regarding their strategy, Team PUBG revealed that their "...strategy was to play defensive counter-attack. It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference".
Red Bull observed the highest number of qualifiers, teams and players it has ever seen. Furthermore, it was the first time that a team outside of Male' took the title. A total of 233 teams comprised of 1,617 players took part in the competition throughout 19 qualifiers and 403 matches across 12 regions in the country.
Team PUBG consists of Abdulla Raufaan Mohamed, Ahmed Shujau, Moosa Mazharu, Ahmed Imdhaah, Hussen Irushaad, Ali Ziyaad and Ali Mahil.
According to Red Bull, the next instalment of Winning 5 will take place in February 2020, and is likely to feature the first female-only championship.
While the winning team received a cheque for MVR 50,000, the runner-ups were awarded MVR 25,000.
