Governing Board of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) granted provisional membership to Maldives' National Paralympic Committee (NPC) during the 82nd IPC Governing Board meeting which was held from June 13-16 in Rome, Italy.

The decision automatically grants NPC Maldives provisional membership of the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC), increasing the number of Asian member nations to 44. Maldives will be added to the South Asian sub-region alongside India, Bhutan, Afghanistan and several other countries.

APC President Majid Rashed warmly welcomed NPC Maldives to the Asian Paralympic Family.

"We look forward to working closely with them to develop the Paralympic Movement in their country and ensure that para-athletes from the Maldives progress to compete at the highest level.”

Maldivian representatives attended the Indonesia 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta as well as the APC General Assembly which was hosted in Dubai in February.

According to the IPC Constitution, full membership requires ratification from the IPC General Assembly. The motion will be presented at the next GA which is scheduled to be hosted at Bonn, Germany in October.
