Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) on Monday, announced 'The Trials' surfing competition scheduled for June 19-22, at esteemed wavebreak 'Raalhugandu' located in capital city Male'.

For the event, MSA will rank competing athletes and seed the top four surfers into the national surf team.

According to MSA's General Secretary Ali Ahsan, the event will feature a single discipline of surfing, the shortboard category.

Registration details for the event will be shared on MSA's facebook page in the near future.

In May, MSA hosted the 'Raalhu Season Opening' competition at Raalhugandu.

During the competition, Hussain Areef (Iboo) and Ali Javed (Jaatte) were crowned champions of the shortboard and bodyboard division respectively.

The event followed an approximate 5-year hiatus of competitions by the association.

Prior to the season-opening, MSA organized judging courses for the divisions of bodyboarding and shortboard. These newly trained judges were part of the judging team for the competition.

Surfing is also an important sector for the tourism industry, as it is the only sport that generates revenue for the country.

Efforts are underway by MSA and the Olympics Committee to train and send athletes to take part in the 2020 Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.

MSA aims to take surfing to new levels in the country by developing local talent and professional athletes within the local population.
