MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil submitted this motion, in which he said that there is a population of over 30,000 in the connected islands of Addu, and that the government has been negligent in providing electricity services to them.
He said that this had presented difficulties in their everyday lives, and the people have voiced concerns about the challenges in operating schools, offices and shops, as well as the damage being caused to household appliances.
Nazil pointed out that the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) had also recently stated that being deprived of the right to electricity would directly impact other fundamental rights, and said that the parliament shared this concern.
He said that despite it being stated in law that that citizens must be given prior notice before an electricity service interruption, Addu has had hours long powercuts several times a day.
He criticized the government, stating that they did not have solid policies to resolve such issues, and that they had failed for over seven months to provide the supplies necessary for repair and maintenance of the powerhouse in Addu.
The emergency motion was accepted through the votes of 57 members.
