Local Government Authority (LGA) has disclosed the criteria on nominating islands amid the progression of the wide-scale project that will see the construction of new council offices in 50 local islands as announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu late last month.

Speaking to the residential community of Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo during his recent trip across the northern atolls, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu shared the most important issue that came to his notice during his tour around the country to address the people of the country and also convene with all atoll councils was that of the councils' operations proceeding in very worn-out buildings.

Addressing this issue, the President had assured that a wide-scale project to build office buildings for the operation of the councils will be commenced within the year, further remarking that the project will be enrolling a investor finance mode.

“We will establish island city council offices in 50 islands under the first stage of this project,” the President had said then.

An announcement by the Local Government Ministry released yesterday in relation to this had disclosed the standards and criteria for point allocations for determining the 50 councils’ institutions that will be constructed under the contractor-finance scheme.

In review of the population of the island, the resources of the council and the current state of the headquarter building, each details is granted 20 points while a maximum of 10 marks has been distinctively allotted for spaces dedicated to councilors, administrative employees and women’s committee.

Councils that has been bestowed the “Kangathi Award" – an award presented by the LGA to the council that performs the best – will accumulate an additional 10 points.

The Authority has extended a period for lodging comments and feedback on the marking and criteria until 13:00 hrs next Thursday.
