The Democrats Party, under the leadership of former President and former Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, achieved its inaugural triumph in a recent local council by-election.
The victory occurred in the by-election to select the president of the Meemu Maduvvari council, where the Democrats' candidate, Mohamed Azim Ali, emerged victorious over the PNC candidate.
Azim secured 194 votes, surpassing the 144 votes garnered by PNC candidate Abdullah Ali.
Expressions of gratitude were extended by the Democrats to those who supported Azim, coupled with congratulations on his win.
Following its establishment in July of the previous year by Nasheed, who was joined by a significant number of members defecting from MDP, this marks the first electoral success for the Democrats Party.
Notably, the party had previously contested the presidential election and participated in the mayoral by-election, albeit without securing victory.
In the recent parliamentary elections held last month, the Democrats failed to secure any seats as well.
