In an announcement yesterday, Male' City Council said that the western side and southeastern side of the cemetery needs to be cleared, with the gravestones also to be removed.
They appealed to families of those interred there who wish to remove and take the gravestones to do so before December 15.
The council said that any stones remaining after the date would be cleared and discarded of as arranged.
Galolhu Cemetery rarely holds burials in the present day, with the internment area also having been used to full capacity now.
City Council has not yet announced why the area is being cleared.
City Council is also clearing Maafannu Cemetery for the construction of a parking building.
