Maldives vote Local Council, Women's Development Committee election

Maldives Saturday voted for the Local Council Elections (LCE) and Women's Development Committee.

The election, which was initially slated for 2020 was delayed due to global pandemic COVID-19.

Voting kicked off at 0700 hrs and will continue until with over 701 ballots across the country. Due to low voter turn out in the morning, voting was delayed for several centres in the atolls.

As per the preliminary results of the elections, the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate, former Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu was elected as the Male' City mayor.

Meanwhile, the three other cities were won by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates.

Former Addu Hithadhoo MP Ali Nizar for Addu City, Mohamed Athif for Kulhudhuffushi City and Ismail Rafeeq for Fuvahmulah City.

Vote counting process is still ongoing.
