Former president Mohamed Nasheed urged all political parties, Non-Governmental Organizations and well-wishers of the nation to back former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to stop the injustice happening in the country.

In an interview he gave to “97 Minivan”, he said it is of the utmost importance for everyone to join efforts as soon as possible to end the injustice occurring currently in the nation. He added that the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) and Jumhooree Party (JP) need to join forces to achieve this.

Moreover, Nasheed highlighted that it is essential for a unity government to come in to power before the presidential elections in 2018.

“Our well-being lies within unison, by putting aside all our endeavors and hatred aside to work together. And I believe we can achieve this,” said Nasheed.

Referring to ]unjust verdicts passed on top political figures, Nasheed said the trials should have been conducted more fairly. Declaring that there can be no development without freedom, Nasheed called for the release of Adhaalath Party’s president Imran Abdullah, former defense minister Mohamed Nazim and Galholhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof along with several other detainees of last year's May Day protest rally organised by MDP.

In addition, Nasheed said no one should intend to offend the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom as it is against the purpose of the reform, within the reform process to bring justice and equality.

“Though the election results of 2013 were rigged, we still gave [President Yameen] the opportunity to reign. However, before the end of 2014, President Yameen tried to abolish all his political opponents and the multiparty system, which is why MDP had to stand against the government," said Nasheed.

When asked about his life in London, Nasheed replied, “It’s not a happy life I’m living, I will return [to the Maldives] soon."
