Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Tuesday, revealed that it is investigating former Supreme Court Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain, to determine whether he was involved in any extrajudicial proceedings of the apex court during his tenure.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has nominated Faiz to the Supreme Court and forwarded his candidacy for the judicial watchdog's advice.

Faiz previously served on the interim Supreme Court, filling the position of Chief Justice when members were appointed to the permanent court. However, Faiz was sacked after amendments to the Judicature Act limited the number of Supreme Court Judges to five, during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration in 2014.

Following the dismissals of former Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi, Supreme Court Judges Adam Mohamed and Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, there are several vacancies on the top court's seven-member bench. Judge Abdulla Areef also recently retired from his position.

As per the constitution, judges for the apex court's bench will be selected by parliament approval from a list of names suggested by the President as per JSC's advice.

Currently, the apex court's bench only consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Aisha Shujoon, Mahaaz Ali Zahir and Husnu al Suood.
