Ministry of Home Affairs, on Monday, revealed that over 2,000 books were received during the recently held book donation programme for prisons.
According to local media Mihaaru, the ministry's Communication Director Hafsee Abdullah stated that although the donation period terminated on Saturday, more books were being donated by the public.
She highlighted the opportunity to continue donation of books to the ministry.
Noting the support from students, organizations and former detainees, Hafsee revealed that prominent figures and high-level government officials also gifted books to the programme, including Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon, and her father and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
As per Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, should the initiative prove successful, the authorities could establish libraries in all the prisons.
"We hope to rehabilitate and educate inmates, and reintegrate them back into society as individuals that would make a positive change", he said.
It was a pledge of the current administration to improve the conditions of prisons across the country. As part of the state's efforts to better treat inmates, the home ministry also decided to increase the wages of working inmates.
