The Maldives Customs Service has confiscated drugs worth MVR 3 million, which were couriered into the country.
In a press statement issued by the Customs, it was reported that 2 kilograms of mephedrone were seized July 7. The drugs were found in a package that was couriered into the Maldives from the United Kingdom.
According to the Customs, the suspicious material found in the package tested positive for mephedrone during the initial testing phase. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be MVR 3.6 million.
According to Customs, the case has been handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.
The attempts to smuggle drugs into the Maldives through the postal system have witnessed a recent surge, raising serious concerns for authorities. Earlier in May, 1.8 kilograms of drugs were seized while being smuggled into the country through the courier.
