Three tourist resorts paid at least USD 3,200 (MVR 50,000) per staff as service charge in January.
According to websites that discloses service charge information, the highest service charge in January was in Velaa Private Island. Velaa had paid USD 3,660 (MVR 56,347) to each of their employees.
The resort is one of the top-ranked resorts on the service charge list almost every month.
Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi is second on the list, having paid USD 3,330 (MVR 51,194) to each employee, , while Soneva resorts paid USD 3,253.64 (MVR 50,171) to each employee.
As Maldives always sees an increase in tourist arrivals every year in December and January, it is reflected in the high amount of service charge paid.
Service charge information is made public based on information provided by resort employees. Some resorts have not revealed the number of service charges distributed this month.
Most of the resorts that have published service charge information so far this month have distributed a service charge of over USD 1,000.
