COVID-19: Maldives 1,467 record cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Friday announced that 1,467 tested positive for COVID-19.

HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the samples that tested positive today, only 939 cases were positive from those collected within the past 24 hours.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 42,775.

Meanwhile, 244 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 27,672 to date.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 1,267 were from the greater Male’ region while 182 cases were from residential islands and 18 from operational resorts.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly, with 21 deaths recorded in May so far. In total, 92 people have passed away.

Moreover, there are 15,003 active cases in the country, the highest figure has been since the first case was found.

To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 162 million people and claimed over 3.37 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 141 million people have recovered.
