Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed, on Monday, that the Maldivian government is currently holding discussions with relevant authorities to ensure the possibility of making arrangements for the burial of Muslims dying in Sri Lanka.

According to the ministry, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa addressed a letter to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, requesting assistance in performing the Islamic burial rites due to difficulties in arranging the proper burial proceedings for Muslims succumbing to COVID-19 in Lanka.

Foreign Ministry stated that, if possible, Maldives will attempt to make these arrangements as special assistance, with the aim of spreading religious unity and honouring the long-standing friendship between the two neighbouring countries.

This development comes at a time when the Lanka government is facing severe backlash for cremating Muslims that had succumbed to COVID-19, against the wishes of their families.
