The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has denied allegations of spying on former President Abdulla Yameen through hidden cameras in the prison unit where he is detained.

MCS said on Wednesday that Yameen's dignity is being maintained while in their custody.

However, MCS denied these allegations.

MCS's media official said that cameras are used for surveillance purposes in the prison to ensure the safety of the prisoners and that they have not been used to violate Yameen's dignity in the manner the opposition have accused.

"Cameras are not there in a manner that would violate the dignities [of the prisoners]. Cameras are used in the prison for surveillance purposes," they said.

Yameen is serving a prison sentence after he found guilty of bribery and money laundering over the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah while serving as president. Similar charges have been filed against him over the lease of Raa atoll Fuggiri during his presidency.
