The Maldives government has allocated MVR 10 million in the state budget for 2024 to reclaim lost sea area due to the maritime boundary dispute between Maldives and Mauritius.

During a meeting of the Parliament's Budget Review Committee on Thursday evening, Dhaandhoo MP Yaugoob Abdulla stated that MVR 10 million has been added to the budget of the Attorney General's Office (AGO) for legal work on maritime issues related to the demarcation of the Maldives-Mauritius sea area.

The committee approved the budget for the AGO with the additional MVR 10 million for legal work on maritime issues related to the Maldives-Mauritius maritime boundary dispute. The committee also called for separate votes on other issues.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to recover the lost sea area due to the dispute between Mauritius and the Maldives. The commitment was made when the case was filed with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).

The current administration said that they have initiated work on the recovery of the lost sea area since the day they were sworn into office. They are currently conducting further research on the matter to proceed with the case.
