Applications have been opened for land plots to be allocated from Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) and for the flats to be allocated from Hulhumalé. This is part of the second phase of the "Gedhoruveriya" scheme, which is the current government's housing scheme.
State Minister for Housing and Chairman of the Flats and Land Plots Allocation Committee, Akram Kamaludeen, said that, similar to the previous phase, people can apply for the land plots and flats through the Gedhoruveriyaa portal. This phase aims to allocate over 8,000 flats in Hulhumalé and more than 4,500 land plots.
Akram said these numbers could increase and that the aim is to grant more than 5,000 land plots.
In the second phase of the Gedhoruveriya Scheme, individuals from other islands who have been residing in Malé for 20 years or more are eligible to apply. The first phase only allowed Malé residents to apply.
In the second phase of the Gedhoruveriya Scheme, the government has designated Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) as one of the areas where land plots will be allocated. This area is currently under development for a coastguard vessel harbor for the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), with 15 hectares already reclaimed.
The policy for landownership in the second phase has been gazetted with changes allowing as many people to apply for the opportunity to obtain land ownership from Giraavaru Uthuru Falhu, part of Uthuru Thila Falhu.
Maldivian citizens aged 18 and above who have not received land previously under the Binveriyaa scheme is eligible to apply this time. State Minister Akram said that those who already have flats can still apply to this scheme in this phase.
Under the Gedhoruveriya Scheme's policy, individual applicants are eligible to receive a land plot measuring 1,250 square feet. If the application is submitted jointly, an additional 400 square feet will be added per individual. A joint application with more than 7 people can receive a land plot of 4,000 square feet.
The policy to grant flats under the Binveriyaa scheme also states that the aim is to provide adequate housing for those who need it the most. People who have been living in Malé for 15 years are eligible to apply for the flats and joint applications can also be submitted.
The conditions for application for flats also specify that the individual should not already own a flat sold by a private provider and that monthly income should not exceed MVR 60,000.
Many people applied for land and flats under the first phase of the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme, and some land plots have already been allocated to beneficiaries. According to the housing ministry, land plots granted from Giraavarufalhu will be handed over this week.
The initial list of beneficiaries of the flats allocated from the first phase have been announced. The government has said that people will start living in these flats before the end of the current term.
