Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail has said that he has no interest in becoming President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's running mate for the upcoming election.
In a tweet, Fayyaz expressed his disinterest in contesting as President Solih's running mate in his bid to secure a second term in office. He alleged former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik of spreading rumors about his desire for the position. The reason for Fayyaz's allegation against Moosa Manik remains unclear.
MDP's presidential candidates, President Solih, has yet to decide on his running mate. However, he said that it has been a "challenging" decision.
"This is currently the most pressing matter on my mind. The decision needs to be made, and I am engaging in individual discussions with party leaders to seek their perspectives and opinions," President Solih stated during a press conference while visiting Fulidhoo in Vaavu atoll for the presidential campaign.
"Every day, I meet with them individually, and various names are suggested," President Solih said.
President Solih said that the MDP, Adaalath Party, and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have begun collaborating for the presidential election, and there is a possibility of selecting a running mate from the coalition.
In the previous presidential election held in 2018, President Solih won with Jumhooree Party's Faisal Naseem as his running mate. However, for the upcoming election, Jumhooree Party has decided to contest separately without forming an alliance with the president. The party's leader, Qasim Ibrahim, has been nominated as their presidential candidate.
