Eight High Commissioners finally given Parliament approval after long wait

The Parliament of Maldives today has given approval to Ambassadors appointed by President Dr Ibrahim Muizzu to eight countries.

The Parliament of Maldives today has given approval to Ambassadors appointed by President Dr Ibrahim Muizzu to eight countries.

The approvals were pending in the Parliament’s committee stage for a long time before finally being approved and sent to the main floor on the 23rd of April.

The eight diplomats who received approval are:

- Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) – United Arab Emirates

- Iruthisham Adam – United Kingdom

- Ali Naseer Mohamed (Alini) – United Nations

- Masood Imad – Sri Lanka

- Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed – Malaysia

- Geela Ali – Belgium and EU

- Mohamed Luveiz – Singapore

- Dr Salma Rasheed – Geneva

Mohamed Hussain Shareef who is now appointed as High Commissioner to the UAE previously served as a Minister and later as an Ambassador to Japan during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.

Iruthisham, who was appointed as Ambassador to the UK previously served as the Youth Minister of Maldives while Ali Naseer Mohamed, ambassador to the UN worked as a foreign secretary.

Masood, appointed to Sri Lanka, previously worked under former President Dr Mohamed Waheed as the Press Secretary while Geela, appointed to Geneva and the EU also has experience in foreign diplomacy and worked as the former Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry.

Dr Salma, who is appointed to Geneva is sister to Asma Rasheed, MP elect for Central Maafannu constituency. She is also the aunt of Mohamed Hussain Shareef, who is appointed as head of mission to the UAE.

High Commissioner to Singapore Mohamed Luveiz’s past experiences include his time as Minister of State for Economic Relations and as member at the Economic and Youth Council during the government of former President Yameen. He also worked in the council of Maldives National University (MNU).

In addition to these 8 representatives, the Parliament is also looking into the approval of Dr Fazeel Najeeb as Ambassador to China and Shiuneen Rasheed as Ambassador to Bangladesh.
