President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sent greetings on the occasion of this year's Commonwealth Day.

In his message, the President said that this day celebrates shared values and strong bonds that unite over 54 countries across 6 continents.

Speaking on this year's theme ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming’, he spoke of the ties that bind the commonwealth family together. He noted that these ties were evident in the support shown towards one another during the ongoing global pandemic.

"It has now been one year since the Maldives re-joined the Commonwealth, and we are proud of all that we have accomplished together within this short time period. The Commonwealth has always been a champion of its member states, from the most populous to small island states. We in turn rely on the Commonwealth to help us achieve our goals such as adapting to the climate emergency, by building stronger and more resilient communities. We are exceptionally grateful for the role the Commonwealth plays in advocating for equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines."

Furthermore, he said that he looks forward to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Rwanda, and expressed hope to advance common interests and contribute to solving common challenges.

President Solih highlighted that Maldives re-joining the organization was symbolic of his administration's commitment to engage with the international community and to deliver domestic pledges to citizens as well.
