The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation announced on Friday that they will commence the process of towing and scrapping vehicles that have been left unused for a long period of time on the roads of Malé and Hulhumalé from Saturday, February 17.
In an announcement, the Ministry stated that this initiative is part of their efforts to tackle traffic issues in the Male' area caused by congestion resulting from an increased number of vehicles.
As part of the initiative, efforts will be made to identify vehicles that have been placed against the regulations on the roads of Malé and Hulhumalé, and subsequently, remove and scrap them in accordance with set regulations.
According to the ministry, the work will be conducted in collaboration by the Male' City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), and the police.
Similar initiatives have been undertaken in the past to remove unused vehicles from the roads of Malé and Hulhumalé.
Last week, the Transport Ministry opened applications for those who want to dispose of their vehicles to alleviate congestion on the roads. The ministry will accept applications until March 3.
Multiple four-wheelers are parked on Male' roads, particularly on both sides of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, causing significant inconvenience. With cars and vans parked on either side of the road, only two lanes are currently usable on the four-lane road.
