Criminal Court extends remand of four people being persecuted for Attack on Nasheed

Criminal Court extends the remand of four people accused of attempting to assassinate Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Saturday.

An IED attached to a motorcycle outside Nasheed's residence exploded on May 6, injuring Nasheed and several others. While ten people were arrested in this case, the state pressed charge against four people; Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed from Vaavu Thinadhoo, Mujaz Ahmed from Male', in addition to Thahumeen Ahmed from Gaafu Alifu Kondey, and Ali Haisham form Noonu Manadhoo.

Adhuham, Mujaz, and Thahumeen were to be kept under the trial is over. Amendments made to to the Criminal Procedure in 2020 requires to renew the detention duration every 30 days.

On Saturday, Criminal Court extended their detention again.

On July 21, Criminal Court ordered to keep Haisham under custody for 30 days. When brought in front of the court on Saturday, his remand was extended until the hearing was over.

It is expected their hearings will be conducted with this week. Adhuham's hearing, who has pleaded guilty, will be conducted first. He has agreed to a 23 year jail sentence.

On July 21, Criminal Court ordered Haisham to be kept under custody for 30 days. When brought in front of the court on Saturday, they changed his detention order to until the hearings were over.

The hearings for these four will most likely be held this week. Adhuham's hearing, who has pleaded guilty, will be held first. He has agreed to a 23 year jail sentence.

Criminal Court has formed a bench of three judges to conduct the trial. They have not yet disclosed the members on this bench.

The investigations for five more individuals arrested in connection to this case are still ongoing.
