Maldives Police Service on Sunday revealed that a 60-year-old man was arrested for indecent exposure in Naifaru, Lhaviyani Atoll.
According to authorities, the man was identified to have exposed himself to children over the course of January and was arrested under a court order at approximately 1810 hrs.
Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) on January 23, ordered the courts to conclude all cases involving child sexual abuse within a period of six months from the date of submission.
As per a circular signed by Judicial Administrator Dr Abdulla Nazeer, child sexual abuse cases must receive priority, and courts are to complete all administrative arrangements within 24 hours of receiving the case.
A series of child sexual abuse cases have come to light in the aftermath of the sexual violence case involving a toddler, her grandfather and great-grandfather, with many victims and concerned parties coming forward.
The two men have since been arrested on child sexual abuse charges, while the victim's father was taken into custody over allegations of negligence.
While the aforementioned case sparked widespread outrage and harsh criticism against the government, public sentiment has remained focused on authorities’ negligence and their failure to take appropriate measures to curb sexual violence against children.
