Addu City Council, on Sunday, began the process of awarding flats to selected home-owners under the government's housing programme.

Tenants of the new flats located in Hithadhoo and Hulhudhoo were confirmed last week according to the City Council. A point system was devised among the potential tenants and lots were drawn between those with equal points to confirm ownership of the flats.

While 264 flats were constructed in Hithadhoo, 48 were developed in Hulhudhoo. Addu City Council confirmed that 20 applicants, who met the required criteria, were being awarded these flats from Hulhudhoo.

The new home-owners are to pay a sum of MVR 19,000 as downpayment for the flats. The remainder will to be paid in installments of MVR 3,000 per month over a period of 20 years.

The government plans to construct 1,500 more flats in Addu City. Applications for these flats were opened from August onwards this year.

The administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed developed 25 housing units in Addu. Residents have been living in these accommodations in Feydhoo since 2012.
